What is massage therapy?

  • Massage Therapy

Massage is a type of integrative medicine in which qualified therapists press, stretch and knead the soft tissues of the body. The soft tissues include muscle tissue, connective tissue, fascial tissue and skin. Therapists may vary the amount of pressure and techniques used according to the client’s individual needs and preferences, and uses oil on the skin to promote fluidity of movement.

Massage therapy is suitable for individuals of all ages and fitness levels, is ideal for those seeking stress relief and relaxation and is effective in reducing muscle tension and stiffness. It has both preventative and remedial effects and can be used to relieve pain, to balance the musculoskeletal system, to promote recovery from injury, to increase blood circulation to the soft tissues and to induce a general sense of relaxation and well being.

Massage techniques used during treatment may include a combination of both Therapeutic and Swedish massage techniques, and will be tailored according to your needs.

Massage therapy is safe to receive for either chronic or acute injuries, and can be used safely before and after surgery for faster recovery. Pre-surgery sessions aim to calm the nervous system and prepare the soft tissues for surgery, while post-surgery sessions focus on reducing soft-tissue soreness, break up scar tissue, and promote the circulation of blood to the injury/surgery site.

Receiving the right therapeutic massage can be a crucial step in caring for both your physical and mental health. Massages are guided by distinct therapeutic goals tailored to the individual needs of the client and are provided by massage therapists registered with the College of Massage Therapists of BC.

  • Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic massage is an ideal modality for the treatment of chronic and acute pain, muscle tension, injuries and problems such as sciatica, tennis elbow, TMJ, etc. It targets relief in specific problem areas, promotes better posture, increases mobility and flexibility, eases stiffness and tension and can relieve tension from ailments such as headaches and stiff neck.

    Key characteristics of therapeutic massage:

Deep pressure: This involves applying firm pressure to reach deep muscle layers and includes targeted manipulations to address chronic tension in areas of discomfort. This type of technique is particularly beneficial for individuals with chronic pain conditions or those recovering from injuries.

Slow strokes: Therapists utilize slow and deliberate strokes to target specific muscle groups while flushing the area to reduce swelling and increase circulation.

Friction techniques: Therapists incorporate deep circular movements to release fascial adhesions and loosen up muscle knots. This helps break up tense and stiff muscle groups and helps restore range of motion.

Trigger Point Therapy: Specific points of tension, known as trigger points, are identified and targeted to release tightness in both the muscles and the surrounding fascia. This can be particularly effective in addressing localized pain and muscle knots.

Stretching: Stretching techniques may include passive and/or active stretches guided by your therapist during your treatment which stretches deep in the muscle belly in order to improve flexibility and to restore proper kinetics.

  • Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is a more versatile form of massage that is practiced all around the world. The primary goal of Swedish massage is to reduce mental and physical stress, promote and induce a deep state of relaxation, ease tension and pain while improving joint flexibility and range of motion, enhancing blood circulation and promoting oxygen and nutrient delivery to the tissues, and improving one’s overall sense of well-being.

Key characteristics of Swedish massage include:

Effleurage: This involves long, gliding strokes using the palms, thumbs, and fingertips. Effleurage helps to warm up the muscles and prepare the body for deeper massage techniques.

Petrissage: This technique involves kneading, lifting, and squeezing the muscles. It targets deeper layers of tissue and aims to release muscle tension and improve circulation.

Fascial Release Techniques: Therapists use gentle sustained pressure to stretch and release the fascia. This can help break down adhesions, reduce restrictions, and improve the overall elasticity of the fascial network.

Tapotement or Percussion: This involves rhythmic tapping, patting, or chopping motions. It is often used to invigorate the muscles and stimulate blood circulation.

Vibration or Shaking: Gentle shaking or vibrating movements are applied to the body. This technique helps relax muscles and release tension.
